The Berlin Marathon 2023: A Journey of Triumph
9/24/2023 - Race Day
The sun was beginning to rise over Berlin, bathing the city’s historic landmarks in a warm, golden light. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as thousands of runners assembled at the starting line for the Berlin Marathon 2023. There I was among them, filled with anticipation and ready to take on the journey I had spent months preparing for.
The atmosphere buzzed with an electric blend of nerves and excitement. I took a deep breath, savoring the cool morning air as it filled my lungs, and thought back to the countless hours of training that had brought me to this point. The early morning runs, the tough long runs, and the commitment to cross-training and recovery had all culminated in this one day.
As the race started, the crowd surged ahead, and I blended into the flow of runners winding through the streets of Berlin. The initial miles were a whirlwind of excitement, with the cheers of the crowd and the rhythm of my footsteps blending into a harmonious symphony. Iconic landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall set a breathtaking backdrop for my run, and I marveled at the historical significance of each landmark.
The early miles went by effortlessly as I settled into a comfortable pace, following the strategy I had carefully crafted. The course guided me through a variety of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character and energy. The enthusiastic cheers from spectators and the vibrant street performances lifted my spirits and fueled my determination.
Around the halfway point, I began to experience the familiar onset of fatigue. My legs were growing tired, but I reminded myself of the countless hours of preparation and the mental resilience I had developed. With each step, I concentrated on my breathing and the rhythm of my stride, persevering through the tough moments.
As I approached the final stretch, the atmosphere became increasingly electric. The roar of the crowd grew louder, and I spotted my family cheering me on with all their might, boosting my spirits with each step. When the Brandenburg Gate came into view, a surge of renewed energy propelled me forward, leaving me overwhelmed with a mix of relief and exhilaration.
Crossing the finish line was a moment of pure triumph. I had achieved it. The overwhelming sense of accomplishment hit me as I received my medal and absorbed the celebratory atmosphere. I took a moment to reflect on the journey that led me here—every early morning run, every challenging workout, and the steadfast support from friends and family, near and far.
As I moved through the finish area, I took a moment to savor the achievement. The Berlin Marathon 2023 was more than just a race; it was a testament to my dedication, resilience, and passion for running. I had triumphed over the course, embraced the challenge, and celebrated the victory.
The memories of that day—the sights, sounds, and emotions—will stay with me forever. The Berlin Marathon 2023 was not just a physical challenge but a deeply exhilarating experience that highlighted the joy and triumph of pursuing one's passions. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my loved ones who supported and cheered me on from start to finish.

How to Prepare and Train for Marathon
12/5/2023
Running a marathon is one of my top goals each year. First and foremost, I'll make notes on the most crucial factors to consider before tackling a marathon.
When - It really depends, but my goal is to run the marathon in the fall, whether it's in September, October, or November. This way, I can spend the rest of the year focusing on preparation and conditioning my body. Typically, I'll run 4-5 days a week, do strength training 2-3 days a week, practice yoga 2-3 days a week, and follow the rest of my recovery routine.
Where - There are numerous race events in the fall, and selecting one can be challenging, especially if my goal is to participate in one of the major marathons. My plan isn't solely dependent on which major marathon I want to run next; I always have a backup plan. The world is vast, with countless other race events to explore—thousands, in fact, beyond just the six world major marathons. Ultimately, the choice depends on what aligns best with my personal preferences.
I’ve chosen the race event. What’s next?
Sign up for the marathon.
Update or upgrade apparel, shoes, and equipment.
Organize the calendar for training plans, tune-up races, and trip bookings.
Register for tune-up races (5k, 10k, or half marathon).
Book the flight.
Reserve the hotel.
Plan for the destination race event:
Expo
Shake-out run
Fuel plan
Hydration plan
Running gear
Prepare for race day:
Race start
Finish line
Celebrate and enjoy the vacation
Once I’ve selected the race event, I can begin planning how to effectively approach the training plan, nutrition guidelines, strength training, and recovery routine.
Even with years of experience, I need to continually educate myself about marathon training. Finding a training plan that suits me is a significant achievement. Having a coach to guide me throughout the season is essential. I must be cautious in executing each workout, as I am prone to injury and cannot focus solely on running without considering complementary aspects of training.
I give myself the grace to commit to long-term training rather than rushing through it. I dislike catching up on missed workouts or making up sessions. If a training day calls for an easy run, then it should be easy or slow. I follow my customized training program strategically and diligently. Each plan has been unique and user-friendly, but listening to my body is crucial. One of my favorite aspects is that the plan is adjustable, which helps me understand and adhere to the process. A structured training plan is always the best way to find the right path.
Pre-run snacks should be easy to digest and quick. Learning to pack the right foods is essential, and while I sometimes fail, I learn from those experiences. I avoid foods and drinks that don’t sit well with my stomach and seek alternatives to better meet my body’s needs. Preparing a meal plan is a time investment, but being smart about it ensures I perform better in subsequent training runs.
I don’t just run; I appreciate the other aspects of training that allow me to focus on more than just running. Incorporating other exercises is crucial for sustaining long-distance endurance. Active recovery days are my favorite, giving me time to relax and enjoy a favorite show. Though it can be complex, having a plan for these workouts is key.
Taking a full day off from workouts is a stark contrast to the rest of the week’s training. I look forward to two full rest days or one active recovery day, which feels like a reward for my hard work. It’s the highlight of my week, and I don’t take it for granted, as I need to care for my body properly.
By understanding and following the components of my training plan and adhering to the one-to-five methods, I believe I can avoid injuries and enjoy a smooth tapering phase.
I refer to taper week as a “lazy week” and appreciate reaching this phase. It’s a semi-celebration, marking the completion of hard work before race day. The race itself will be a culmination of all the training I’ve done, compressed into a few hours.
Anxiety is natural, but I know how to handle it from previous marathons. I focus on preventing any issues during the race, ensuring I relax, rest, eat, and hydrate well.
I remind myself of the hard work I’ve invested and run at my own pace. I appreciate the people around me and make the most of every hydration and fuel station. I savor the experience and soak it all in until the finish line.
Finally, celebrate! Honor my accomplishment and treat my body with kindness for taking me to the finish line. It deserves the care needed to repeat this journey over and over again.
